The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI), with generous support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), is proud to announce the official launch of its new publication titled:
“A Practical Guide for Inclusive Climate Actions for Women and Girls with Disabilities.”

This pioneering document marks a major step toward bridging the gap between climate change policy and disability inclusion in Nigeria. Developed through in-depth research, field surveys, and stakeholder engagement across FCT, Kogi, Niger, and Nasarawa States, the guide sheds light on how climate change disproportionately impacts women and girls with disabilities—and provides clear, practical solutions.

Why This Guide Matters

Women and girls with disabilities face intensified risks during climate crises, including:

  • Increased exposure to health hazards
  • Barriers to evacuation and emergency response
  • Economic marginalization and job insecurity
  • Exclusion from climate policy and decision-making processes
Despite these challenges, most climate policies fail to adequately include disability considerations. This guide addresses these gaps by offering a step-by-step framework for inclusive climate policy design and implementation.

What’s Inside the Guide?

The publication is organized into five key sections:

  1. Disability-Inclusive Climate Change Strategies
  2. Inclusive Climate Financing
  3. Adaptation and Resilience Measures
  4. Climate and Disability Justice
  5. Human Rights and Policy Analysis in Nigeria
Each section provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, civil society organizations, organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), development partners, and community stakeholders.

A Tool for Change

This guide is more than a publication—it is a call to action. It encourages all actors across sectors to:

  • Integrate the rights of persons with disabilities into climate policy
  • Allocate funding specifically for disability-inclusive programs
  • Involve women with disabilities in climate governance
  • Develop accessible disaster preparedness and emergency response strategies
