Access to clean and accessible toilets is a basic human right, yet most public toilets in Nigeria remain inaccessible to persons with disabilities. Many of these facilities are poorly designed, too small to accommodate wheelchairs, and often flooded with water and urine, making them unsanitary and unsafe.

Imagine a woman on a wheelchair visiting a public toiletโ€”unable to fit her wheelchair into the cramped space, she is forced to crawl on the dirty floor just to relieve herself. This degrading and unhygienic experience highlights the urgent need for inclusive infrastructure.

In response to this challenge, Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative AWWDI, in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and fully financed by UNFPA Nigeria, has constructed These toilets are spacious, clean, and disability-friendly, ensuring dignity and comfort for persons with disabilities who visit the facility.

This intervention will not only promote hygiene and privacy but also enhance access to healthcare services for persons with disabilities, particularly women and girls. Accessible toilets mean fewer health risks, restored dignity, and greater independence for those who have long been marginalized by poor infrastructure.

We sincerely thank UNFPA for funding this project and encourage governments, organizations, and stakeholders to prioritize inclusive facilities across Nigeria. Together, we can build a society where no one is left behind.
