Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) is a national organization led by and for women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria. Founded in 2008 by Mrs. Patience Ogolo Dickson, a woman with a physical disability herself, AWWDI is driven by the passion to empower over 20 million Nigerian women and girls with disabilities, particularly those marginalized and forgotten.
Our Mission:
We strive to create an enabling environment where women and girls with disabilities can thrive and reach their full potential. We achieve this through:
• Advocacy: championing policies and programs that ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and girls with disabilities.
• Training: Equipping women and girls with disabilities with the skills and knowledge they need to lead fulfilling lives.
• Research: Generating data and evidence to inform effective interventions and advocacy efforts.
• Promoting Inclusive Development: Working to ensure that all development initiatives are inclusive of and accessible to women and girls with disabilities
.
Our Reach:
AWWDI has a robust grassroots network spanning 25 states in Nigeria. We work with over 2,000 women and girls with disabilities, organized into 116 constituent-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups represent a diverse range of disabilities, including physical impairments, albinism, blindness, deafness, intellectual impairments, spinal cord injuries, leprosy, women of short stature, and psychosocial disabilities. Each group plays a vital role in implementing our projects and ensuring our work reflects the specific needs and realities of its members. Our Impact:
Over the past decade, AWWDI has become a respected national federation, recognized for its pioneering efforts in breaking down barriers for women and girls with disabilities. We have:
• Secured policy changes that improve the lives of women and girls with disabilities.
• Empower thousands of women and girls with skills and knowledge.
• Raised awareness about the challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities.
• Contributed to a more inclusive Nigeria for all. Join us!
We invite you to join us in our mission to empower women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria. Whether you are a woman with a disability, an advocate, a donor, or simply someone who believes in equality and inclusion, there are ways you can get involved.
